Senior Master Tracy Lee Thomas of Changing Lives Martial Arts is sad to find out that almost 10% of school age children are the victims of a bully. Bullying is most common by the second grade and occurs throughout life. Bullying can be both physical and verbal, and can range from mild teasing to pushing and hitting. Bullying is even done quite often on the internet.

The team of instructors at Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, Virginia is trying to make a difference by building strong leaders in the community through Martial Arts and Krav Maga. It concerns Tracy Lee Thomas that children are being victimized by their peers. Being a victim of a bully can lead to a child avoiding school and developing anxiety about attending class.

Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts has an Anti-Bullying Karate for Kids Program and encourages parents to enroll their children.

Research and various case studies show us that victims of bullies are usually stereotyped as being loners, passive, quiet, sensitive, anxious, and with low self-esteem they are often smaller and/or weaker than the other children of the same age and they may even come from an overprotective home. Being a victim of a bully can cause your child to feel insecure, lower their self-confidence and have feelings of low self-worth and poor self-esteem.  This may ultimately lead to depression and/or violence, either against themselves or against the bully. “Awareness is the key for parents, watching for changes in attitude, behavior and daily actions” states Sr. Master Instructor, Tracy Lee Thomas.

Unfortunately, victims of bullies often do not seek help or confide in anyone about the bullying, either because of shame or embarrassment or fear that it will be worse if the bully finds out. It is important to look for signs in your children. One of these signs could be, school avoidance behaviors, especially chronic nonspecific complaints, such as headaches or stomachaches, or they may have trouble sleeping. Also, if your child seems afraid or anxious about going to school, has a change in his/her personality or his/her behavior, or a change in his/her grades, you should consider that he/she may be a victim of a bully at school. Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts teaches students and the youth within the community “LIFE SKILLS” that will change a child’s life and teach them…”Don’t Be A Target” and Don’t Be A Victim” in life.  “Quality Life Skills such as; Self-Respect, Self-Esteem, Self-Confidence and enhanced social skills offer our students the ability to manage these concerns” states, Changing Lives Martial Arts Master Instructor.

If you suspect that your child may be a victim of a bully, you can ask them if they are being teased at school, or ask more open-ended questions, such as “What do you like to do at recess?” or “Who do you sit with at lunch?” Be open and listen to your child and most of all utilize your instinct as a parent.

Children are most often bullied at school, usually on the playground or at lunchtime when children are more likely to have minimal supervision, or it may occur in the hallways between classes or on the school bus. In any situation, the better supervised children are, the less likely that bullying will occur. Role playing on how to deal with verbal and physical bullying is taught in classes at Changing Lives Martial Arts in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, Virginia.

Children who are bullies may have problems with low self-esteem, but newer theories argue that bullies are driven more by a desire to have power over others and to be “in control” because they have poor self-esteem and that they have little empathy for their victims. They may also be aggressive, bossy, controlling, have a low level of self control, and have difficulty making friends. Bullies are also more likely to develop criminal behaviors as adults. Characteristics such as these are not accepted or healthy in any community. Changing Lives Martial Arts teaches how to strategically recognize, manage and deal with such improper behavior.

While this may help you understand why a bully acts the way they do, this doesn’t necessarily help your child deal with the problem when it occurs. Changing Lives Martial Arts offers classes that deal directly with these concerns. Things that you should avoid include teaching your child to fight back, since they may get hurt and it may also get him/her in trouble at school.  We need to teach our children to be assertive and to show self-confidence at all times. Interact socially, and become a user of quality life skills that will protect them from becoming a victim.

Parents often turn to enrolling their children in a martial arts program, and while this can be helpful to build their self-esteem and help them be more assertive, the goal of taking the classes should not be so that he/she can fight back but to instill confidence and enhance their self-esteem. Changing Lives Martial Arts teaches two levels of Anti-Bullying, Level I is “Safe Defense” through quality life skills they learn the … “Don’t Be A Target” program. First and foremost they need to demonstrate and hold themselves in a manner that is not one that bullies see as a target. Second, they learn “Self Defense” through verbal practice and physical drills and skills students become aware of how a bully may attack them as an individual.

It may also help to talk with school officials about the problem (so that they can better supervise your child, observe the bully and intervene when necessary) and teach your child not to respond too strongly to the bully (either by crying or giving in to demands), because the bully is more likely to continue bullying your child if he/she knows that they will get a response.

Schedule a meeting between the parents of the children involved and school officials so everyone is aware and the potential and harmful threat may be dealt with.

Changing Lives Martial Arts can teach your child to walk away (but while staying calm and not running), tell the bully to stop and leave him/her alone, or to use humor and come up with a good comeback when a bully teases him/her. It can also help if your child has high self-esteem and if he/she has some strong friendships, so that he/she is less of a target. Teaching your child to make eye contact with others (especially the bully) and to talk with a strong voice may also help. Role playing situations where he/she is bullied may be helpful in teaching how to respond.

It is also important for the bully to understand that bullying is not acceptable and will not be tolerated. If the bullying behavior or other aggressive behaviors persist, then he/she may need to speak with a trusted adult like a family member, friend or even their martial arts instructor as a mentor.

No one should ever become a Target or Victim in life. CLMA takes bullying serious and stands to protect the youth within the community. STAND UP & STAND PROUD!

How to Talk to “Your Teen” about Bullying

Virginia Beach Martial Arts- Taekwondo-Karate- -Krav Maga
Chesapeake Martial Arts- Taekwondo-Karate- -Krav Maga

Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, VA is concerned for the teens in our community.

Suicides by teens who have been harassed by bullying and cyber-bullying (bullying by electronic means such as email, Facebook, MySpace, on websites or via text message) are in the news and on the minds of parents throughout Hampton Roads. But rather than simply worrying and hovering over your teen, it’s important to address the topic NOW, before any situation in your teen’s life escalates.

Here are some tips and tools for parents to use when talking to their teen about bullying, anti-bullying and being bullied. These bullying tips and tools are from Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts Master Instructor, Senior Master T. L. Thomas, 7th Degree Black Belt owner of multiple martial arts and Krav Maga Academies in South Eastern Virginia area.

Open the Conversation Now—Don’t Wait for Your Teen

Beginning a conversation with your teenager can be difficult, but the topic of bullying is crucial. Use the recent news stories as a conversation opener with your teen. Open the communication flow and listen to what your teen has to say. Senior Master Tracy Lee Thomas, suggests, “It is best to feel your child out and let him/her talk in a manner that is comfortable for them. Listen more and speak less. Try to remain calm and neutral to see where your teen takes the topic. As a parent, I understand it takes courage to speak openly with your teen. A quote I often think about from Winston Churchill, Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen. It is time as parents and mentors of teens that we take the time to listen.” Changing Lives Martial Arts and Krav Maga training systems is very unique as it has a structured system and class planners in how they teach various martial arts “LIFE SKILLS” such as enhanced self- confidence, improved self-esteem, and self-respect that will change a teenagers life forever.

When Your Teen Opens Up, DO NOT Shut Him/Her Down.

When your teens feels comfortable enough to bring a bullying situation to your attention, sit down and listen. Try not to overreact by getting emotional and angry. Most importantly, don’t judge and resist the urge to place blame or cross-examine your teenager. Keep calm and use your self-control life skills to keep the line of communication open. Your teen needs to know you care and that you are going to help the situation by responding to their concern in a positive, effective manner. Use this time to listen by giving gentle prompts about how your teen felt during the bullying. This will encourage your teen to continue sharing and opening up to you. Sometimes our teens just need to know that they have your love and support. Keep in mind, no one wants to be embarrassed, but they may want positive help but don’t know who to turn to on possible life threatening occasions.

Prepare Your Teen to Stand Up to Bullying, try a Martial Arts Class or a Krav Maga Class.

As parents, we may worry that we sometimes sound like a broken record, but here are some life skill areas you can NEVER talk about too often with your teens:

Making good decisions in their treatment of peers, setting the example by not excluding others can often create an anti-bullying atmosphere.
Standing up for what they believe in when they are around peers who treat others poorly. Self-control, self-esteem, and self-confidence are just a few of the many life skills taught at Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts and these skills give teens the necessary tools to stand up for themselves and their peers.
Emphasizing that they NEVER have to “just take it” if they are being harassed in any way, encourage your teen to share what is happening to them with a trusted adult.
Feeling good about who they are and loving themselves. Self-esteem is a key component to stop bullying. Martial arts is proven to build self-esteem. Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts and Krav Maga in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake offers a 3 day Confidence Course for teens. For a location near you, visit http://www.atakick.com .
Letting your teen know that you ALWAYS “have their back”, value and love EVERYTHING about them. Teens need to understand that even if you don’t believe in some of their choices or decisions, they will always have your love, understanding, and support.
Help teens understand that there is a solution to every problem with bullying. By using life skills in their everyday lives, they can create actions used to solve situations and achieve desired results.
“Don’t Be A Target”, states; Tracy Lee Thomas. “we must guide our children with positive life skills to create a pattern in dealing with the right choice in life. Martial Arts and Krav Maga builds confidence and creates a well-rounded youth who can and will make the right choices based on training, role playing and positive mentorship”. At CLMA students learn to hold their head high, look others in the eye, and display strong self confidence that wards possible harm away and choosing to NOT Be a Target of bullying.

Let’s teach the youth in our community… Don’t Be A Victim and Don’t Be A Target !

People Getting Fit In Krav Maga!

This article is about the physical demands of Krav Maga. It goes on to explain how meeting those demands make Krav Maga an ideal workout.

Krav Maga, mixed martial art style training, physical fitness with krav maga and kickboxing

Krav Maga is less about ceremony and tradition than many martial arts like karate, taekwondo, hapkido, or kung fu. What Krav Maga is more concerned with is actual effective fighting techniques. Originally Krav Maga was developed in Czechoslovakia in the 1930’s by Imi Lichtenfeld. Then enhanced by the Israeli defense forces, Krav Maga is designed to end physical encounters in a quick and sometimes brutal fashion using rapid counterattacks or preemptive strikes. This is why it is often utilized by athletes who compete in mixed martial arts competitions. It is also taught to police and Special Forces all over the world.

Many people are initially drawn to Krav Maga and other mixed martial arts styles because they want to learn effective fighting techniques. However, they often discover that as an added benefit to training in Krav Maga, they wind up getting into the best shape of their adult lives.

Krav Maga can be an incredibly powerful tool for physical fitness. The techniques and training methods utilized in Krav Maga demand whole body fitness and regularly practicing them can be a great method of overall conditioning. People who train regularly in Krav Maga find that they end up increasing their level of cardiovascular fitness, building up core strength and becoming stronger, fitter and more flexible in general.

Krav Maga is a mixed martial art in every sense of the term in that it employs wrestling, grappling and striking techniques. The style was originally developed from street fighting techniques and requires strength, speed and a decent level of overall toughness to master. There are no forms in Krav Maga nor are there sporting federations or official uniforms. Instead, there are just proven, effective fighting techniques designed to neutralize an opponent so that you can escape to safety.

For a Krav Maga workout to be truly effective, it must generally be a combination of an aerobic and anaerobic workout. A good level of cardio fitness is required to be able to rapidly deliver techniques while a good level of strength is also necessary in order for them to be effective. This makes Krav Maga one of the best options available to choose from for people who are looking to martial arts as a means of getting fit.

Changing Lives ATA Krav Maga is a Krav Maga school in the Virginia Beach and Chesapeake area operated by Tracy Lee Thomas. It has been around since 1991and is the only school in the area that offers officially sanctioned instruction in Krav Maga. The training provided at CLMA is intended to give students an effective and realistic means of defending themselves should worse come to worse and a street encounter situation arises.

However, many students who take part in the Krav Maga program come not to learn to defend themselves, but purely because they find the training to be the best whole body workout they’ve ever had.

Krav Maga Has Great Dynamic Combatives That Are Exciting!

This article outlays several dynamic combative principles of Krav Maga. It then explains them in some detail.

Krav Maga Virginia Beach is a top martial arts school and a Best of The Beach Winner since 2005.

Krav Maga is an Israeli martial arts system that was derived from street fighting techniques and perfected by the Israeli Military, the IDF. Krav Maga employs a number of dynamic combative principles that make it one of the most practical and realistic martial arts when it comes to real world self-defense. Krav Maga was developed in Czechoslovakia in the 1930’s by Imi Lichtenfeld.

Four basic dynamic combative principles in Krav Maga that you may find interesting.

1. Do maximum damage in minimal time

2. Transition from defending to attacking quickly, if not simultaneously

3. Utilize surrounding items as weapons

4. Awareness

Krav Maga training is intended to be even more realistic in a quicker time frame then most martial arts. While some martial art techniques are intended to defeat an opponent in a ring, the dynamic combative of Krav Maga were designed for use in life and death situations. There are no uniforms or point systems in Krav Maga. It simply relies on doing what works.

Martial Arts Master, Master Tracy Thomas of Virginia Beach owns and operates five locations in Hampton Roads. Krav Maga clinics, workshops and instructor camps are held in Great Neck section of Virginia Beach. Krav Maga course held at the Virginia Beach Resort Great Neck.

Part of Krav Maga training involves conditioning students to deal with the shock of an actual fight. Being able to function effectively under the stress of combat while taking blows is integral to being able to use martial arts in a self-defense situation. Changing Lives Krav Maga in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake utilize the High Gear suits for scenario training. Krav Maga training places a greater emphasis on this than many other martial arts forms do.

Unlike many Asian martial arts forms, karate, taekwondo, hapkido, and kung fu, Krav Maga is modern, having only been invented in the 1930s. Because of this, its dynamic combative principles are more suitable to dealing with real world urban encounters. Gun and knife attacks have been part of the modern urban landscape for more than a hundred years. Unlike karate and kung fu that predate the widespread use of guns, Krav Maga has proven defenses against them.

A big part of what students gain from Krav Maga is the awareness to identify and avoid dangerous situations. While it is a combative principle of it to end conflicts quickly, and if necessary, brutally, there is still a code of conduct to adhere to. Along with training properly to avoid injury, the combative principles of Krav Maga include directives about practicing good citizenship, acting humbly, avoiding confrontation and not using unnecessary force.

Training in mixed martial arts is a great way to get in shape while learning reality based self-defense techniques. Training in a mixed martial art adds variety to a student’s workout routine. This variety makes the training more stimulating than boring gym routines which in turn often encourages more regular workouts. While getting in great shape is not a dynamic combative principle of Krav Maga, it is one of its key added benefits.

Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts is a martial arts school with several locations in the Virginia Beach, Chesapeake region. They are the only school in the area that is officially sanctioned to offer training in Krav Maga.

If you would like to learn more about the dynamic combative principles of Krav Maga, you may contact them by phone at 757-471-9002 or via their website http://www.Go2KravMaga.com or http://www.kravmagavirginiabeach.com

From Behind The Business Desk To Krav Maga

This article is about the misconceptions about Krav Maga. It highlights the fact that Krav Maga can be an ideal means of getting in shape even for those who have been inactive for some time.

Virginia Beach Krav Maga and Chesapeake Krav Maga

There are perhaps more misconceptions about Krav Maga than there are about practically any other style of martial arts. Krav Maga was developed in Czechoslovakia in the 1930’s by Imi Lichtenfeld. It is true that Krav Maga was derived from the street fighting techniques of gangs living in tough European ghettos in the 1930s. It is also true that it was adapted and perfected by the Israeli military for battlefield use. However, the common misconceptions about Krav Maga are that it is a mixed martial art and is only suitable for young people.

Krav Maga is in fact a highly effective self defense system that is suitable for men and women of all ages. The techniques in Krav Maga include striking, grappling, throws, joint locks, takedowns and more. They can effectively be carried out by men or women of any age and against larger, stronger opponents.

If you’ve been physically inactive for a longer period of time, Krav Maga can be a great way to get back into shape. Making the transition from the office chair to Krav Maga may seem daunting at first. However, once you begin your training you may find that you are having a great time getting into the best shape of your adult life. While at the same time you are learning a realistic, practical means of defending yourself and your loved ones should the need ever arise.

Changing Lives Krav Maga of Virginia Beach, Virginia is a martial arts school with a number of locations in the Virginia Beach, Chesapeake area. It is the only school in the region that is officially sanctioned to offer training in Krav Maga, by Krav Maga Worldwide. Head instructor Tracy Lee Thomas is a seventh degree black belt with over 20 years experience teaching martial arts to adults and children in Virginia.

Master Thomas is a firm believer that Krav Maga is one of, if not the best martial arts system available for real world self defense in the world of combatives. Unlike karate and kung fu, Krav Maga was born in the modern era and is designed for modern, urban encounters. Unlike mixed martial arts, Krav Maga was developed not for winning bouts in the ring but for gaining the upper hand in actual life and death situations on the street and on the battlefield.

Contrary to what many may have been told, Krav Maga classes aren’t filled with thugs and hooligans who are hell bent on doing each other in. Krav Maga classes at Changing Lives Krav Maga are filled with everyday citizens. People who are looking for a fun way to get fit and stay healthy while at the same time learning to defend themselves should the need ever arise. This is done in a “safe” environment.

People begin training in Krav Maga with all kinds of different physical backgrounds. Some are already fit and may have even trained in mixed martial arts. Others may have been inactive for some time.

Krav Maga Defense… Close Quarters Training

CHANGING LIVES KRAV MAGA

Krav Maga Defense… Close Quarters Training

This article explains that Krav Maga is more modern than most Asian martial arts. Because of this, it is often seen as best suited for close quarter encounters.

Krav Maga Training in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, Virginia

Krav Maga can be roughly translated to mean “close quarter fighting” in Hebrew. It is a highly effective martial art that utilizes a combination of strikes, grapples, throws, locks and holds. Originally, Krav Maga was derived from the street fighting techniques of Jewish gangs defending themselves in the tough ghettos of Bratislav in the 1930s. Krav Maga was developed in Czechoslovakia in the 1930’s by Imi Lichtenfeld. After the nation of Israel was born, Krav Maga was adapted and further developed by the Israeli security forces.

Krav Maga is more effective for close quarter combat than many other styles of the mixed martial art. Unlike most Asian martial arts, it was born in the modern era. This makes it a very modern system of self defense. While karate and kung fu were developed to for individuals to defend themselves while traveling the dangerous highways of feudal Japan, Korea and ancient China, Krav Maga was designed to be used in the tighter confines of an urban setting.

Being a modern martial art, it also provides reliable techniques for defending oneself against an opponent armed with a gun or knife.

Close quarters fighting in Krav Maga is about using simple, direct movements to neutralize an opponent quickly. It is a fighting style developed on the streets and perfected on the battlefield. There is no sporting federation or points system involved. Groin strikes, joint breaks, eye jabs are all legitimate close quarters fighting techniques that can be learned and used in Krav Maga.

Close quarters defense in Krav Maga is reliant on several factors. Technique is of course essential but so is awareness, discipline and aggressiveness. Unlike many martial arts that are embodied with a non-violent code, aggressiveness is vital in it. Close quarters fighting in Krav Maga is about ending an encounter quickly and when necessary, brutally.

Discipline is key because without it is impossible to master Krav Maga; and awareness is key because it allows you to head off or avoid conflicts before they arise. In worse case scenarios, awareness can help you determine when it may be necessary to launch a preemptive strike.

The training is meant to be realistic in nature and to prepare students in the event they should find themselves in a close quarter encounter with an assailant. Many of the techniques used in Krav Maga are popular with mixed martial arts competitors for their effectiveness in bringing down an opponent.

Close quarters defense in Krav Maga is not really something you can learn by just reading about it. In order to really learn the techniques, you need training from qualified professionals.

Changing Lives ATA Krav Maga is a school that teaches Krav Maga, taekwondo, karate and mixed martial art. It is the only school in the Virginia Beach and Chesapeake area that is officially sanctioned to provide instruction in Krav Maga, by the Nationally recognized Krav Maga Worldwide. Krav Maga Instructor Tracy Lee Thomas of Virginia is the senior Krav Maga instructor in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, Virginia.

How You Can Build Confidence In Krav Maga

This article is about how martial arts in general can lead to better self-confidence. It goes on to state that because of Krav Maga’s distinct characteristics, it is an even better means of developing self-confidence than some other martial arts.

Krav Maga strikes up a strong foundation of confidence in Virginia Beach

Like most martial arts, Krav Maga can be a very powerful tool for building up your own sense of self-confidence. People are attracted to martial arts for a number of different reasons; learning self-defense and increased physical fitness being two of the more obvious. However, many people don’t realize that there are a great number of people who turn to mixed martial arts as a means of boosting their sense of self-confidence.

Krav Maga is a highly realistic, practical and very effective martial art that was originally derived from street fighting techniques and developed by the Israeli military. Because of its real world effectiveness, it is very popular with mixed martial arts competitors and police forces around the world. Training in Krav Maga requires strength, speed, skill, flexibility and enormous stamina. Most people are much fitter as a result of training in Krav Maga than they are before they embark on a training regimen. The increased level of fitness that Krav Maga brings about is just one of the many ways in which it can help to build up your self-confidence.

It is a well known fact that being fit can lead to an improved self-image which generally manifests itself as greater self-confidence. However, there are other ways in which Krav Maga can build up your self-confidence. For starters, Krav Maga is a very effective fighting system. It can provide you with the tools to surprise and over power many would be attackers. Knowing you have these capabilities can give you the freedom to walk with less fear. Not that Krav Maga encourages you to go looking for a fight, but at the same time it might make people look at you and think twice about starting trouble.

Training in Krav Maga and other mixed martial art styles can be likened to the heat of a forger’s fire. By plunging your body into the forge you reshape and rebuild a better, stronger version of yourself. This better, stronger physical version of you can bring about an overall reevaluation of the self that often results in a boost to self-confidence in general.

Krav Maga is one of the most challenging and demanding of all mixed martial art styles to train in. Learning the strikes, grapples, locks, throws and holds involved in Krav Maga will give you more physical, mental and spiritual fortitude overall. The bottom line is that applying yourself to excel at something difficult will always lead to a boost in your own sense of confidence.

Changing Lives Krav Maga of Virginia Beach and Chesapeake is a martial arts school that has been training adults and children for 20 years now. It has the only officially sanctioned Krav Maga program available in the Virginia Beach Chesapeake area. If you are interested in finding out more about Krav Maga as a means to boost your own sense of self-confidence, or interested in taking a weekend course held in Great Neck at the Virginia Beach Resort, contact CLKM at their headquarters by phone at 757-471-9002 or visit them on the Web at http://www.Go2KravMaga.com
